Canvas Basics Training Workshops – 2023 PDI
For instructors, TA’s and staff members who have not used Canvas before or who need to brush up on their skills, at the beginning of each semester, we offer Canvas Basics workshops.
Build a Course in Canvas
- How to design your course to match your pedagogy and learning objectives.
- Which file formats to use so students can access your content.
- How to take mobile device needs into your course design.
- Upload and organize files in your Canvas course
- Create Pages and Modules to present content to your students.
- Use the built in dynamic Syllabus tool.

Introduction to Canvas Assignments and Gradebook
- Pedagogical assessment considerations.
- The relationship between assignments and the Canvas gradebook.
- How to create a column in the gradebook.
- The options that are available when you create an assignment.
- Rubric basics.
- Perform subtotal calculations by assignment groups.
- How to enter grades for your students.
- Download a copy of your Canvas gradebook.

Canvas New Quizzes – Getting Started
New Quizzes will become the only quiz option in CSU’s Canvas by summer/fall 2023. Get to know New Quizzes!
- Learn the new question types and features in New Quizzes.
- Learn how to apply settings on a New Quiz. Shuffle questions/answers, manage what students see when they complete the quiz.
- Learn how to create questions in a New Quiz.
- Preview how the quiz will look to students.
- How to use Question Groups to make a quiz unique per student.
- How to view a student’s submission in SpeedGrader.
- How to moderate a quiz and add additional time or attempts for a student’s quiz.
- Learn how to migrate an existing classic quiz, which does not rely on question banks, over to a New Quiz.

Canvas Advanced Gradebook
- How to give extra credit.
- Weight your grades by assignment groups. g. Exams 50%, Papers 25%
- Exclude a student from a course assignment.
- Assign an assignment to certain students in your course.
- Drop the lowest score in an assignment group.
- Create a grading scheme for your course.
- Calculate final letter grades for your students. At the end of the semester final grades can be imported into ARIESweb.
